Argentine among 5 killed in NYC helicopter crash

Part of the reason why it took so long to pull their bodies from the sunken wreckage was because they were strapped in with special harnesses that had allowed them to lean out and take pictures of the city while the doors of the helicopter were open.

"It's a great tragedy that we had occur here on an otherwise quiet Sunday evening", Nigro said. The official was briefed on the investigation but was not authorized to speak publicly about it and spoke Monday on condition of anonymity.

He said that any helicopter operating around water should have floats so that it can land on water and stay upright. The pilot was able to escape the crash after the aircraft flipped upside down in the water killing several passengers, officials said.

FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said the rescue was hampered by the fact that the passengers were tightly harnessed.

A floating crane slowly raised the submerged helicopter to the surface Monday and towed it off to be examined, as Democratic U.S. Sen.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the helicopter, a Eurocopter AS350, went down in the East River near Roosevelt Island at 7 p.m. ET.

Cell phone video showing the moment the helicopter, being used for a photo shoot, crashed into the water.

"He decided he wanted to help people" and set out to do it, said Cole Collins, a childhood friend from Dallas.

The FAA hasn't commented on Schumer's suggestion.

All five passengers who were on a sightseeing helicopter that went down in New York City yesterday have died.

Business Insider says Trevor Cadigan was "smart, talented, and ambitious" and "made a big contribution" during an internship there. His profile on the site says he was originally from Dallas.

"One of the most hard parts of the rescue were that five people were tightly harnessed ... people had to be cut out", Mr Nigro said.

He had been working as a video journalist for Business Insider in NY since October.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

He continued, "The pilot freed himself". All five passengers died.

The victims have been identified as Brian McDaniel and Trevor Cadigan from Texas, Argentine tourist Carla Vellejos Blanco, Tristian Hill and Daniel Thompson.

As the investigation continues, McDaniel's tight-knit crew is grateful to the New York City Fire Department for keeping watch over their fallen brother.

Mr McDaniel, 26, had been with the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department since May 2016. Owner Liberty Helicopters is referring all inquiries to investigators.

Travis Howard, a St. Louis resident, told The Post that his family was panicking Sunday night because they had not heard from his 26-year-old brother-in-law, who they believed may have been on the helicopter.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

The charter helicopter was hired for a photo shoot.

The aircraft was owned by Liberty Helicopters, a company that offers both private charters and sightseeing tours popular with tourists.

The person at the other end of the transmission had trouble making out what the pilot was saying.

The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched investigators on Monday.
