Elon Musk: SpaceX Vehicle Ready for 'Short Trips' Next Year

Musk told the audience that SpaceX has already started working on the first interplanetary reusable rocket-BFR (aka Big Fucking Rocket)-that he wants to take to Mars.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said a rocket that's meant to put humans on Mars could launch in early 2019.

In addition to detailing his lofty ambitions, the SpaceX CEO warned those who are eager to make the journey to the Red Planet there is a "good chance" they could die. The business magnate said he expects BFR to take short flights early next year, but only after conceding that his timelines haven't always been accurate, a reference to the delays plaguing new Tesla models.

Musk announced past year that his private company SpaceX is working to send a cargo mission to Mars by 2022. He also speculated that "most likely, the form of government on Mars would be somewhat of a direct democracy", in which residents would vote directly on particular issues. The Tesla and SpaceX founder, 46-year-old Elon Musk, has long dreamed of creating a human colony on Mars.

The SpaceX Falcon Heavy takes off from Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, on February 6, 2018, on its demonstration mission.

Elon Musk said it, and Elon Musk delivered it. It should be "easier to get rid of a rule than to put one in".

Musk urged future colonizers to "keep laws short", so that people can easily read and digest the bills before voting on them.

Mr Musk said a tremendous amount of entrepreneurial resources would be needed to launch a manned mission to Mars, "because you have to build out the entire base of industry, everything that allows human civilisation to exist".

Mars will need pizza joints, and one day people will drink at a Mars Bar, he said - congratulating himself on the Dad joke.

When asked about his motivation for entering the space industry, Musk explained that he felt that there was insufficient progress and investment being made to make space travel a reality. "A Mars bar", he said to laughs.

Musk admitted as much about his habit of blowing through deadlines with a sarcastic comment from the SXSW stage.

At the music, film and media festival known as SXSW, Musk conceded that his forecasts on project completion times are sometimes a bit rosy: "People have told me that my timelines historically have been optimistic". "I'm trying to 'recalibrate" to some degree here".
