'Hallmarks of genocide' in Myanmar: UN expert

'Hallmarks of genocide' in Myanmar: UN expert

"Myanmar's authorities are erasing evidence of crimes against humanity, making any future attempts to hold those responsible to account extremely hard", Hassan said.

Amnesty International on Monday published a report containing satellite images that it said showed Rakhine State, home to the majority of Rohingya, being militarized at an alarming pace.

"This makes the voluntary, safe and dignified return of Rohingya refugees an even more distant prospect", Hassan said.

"In some of the camps that have been established to receive refugees back, these are in highly militarised zones with a lot of security factors around it", said Mr O'Gorman.

The refugees are fleeing a military operation in which security forces and Buddhist mobs have killed men, women and children, looted homes and torched Rohingya villages.

The exact death toll can not be confirmed since Myanmar's government restricts obstructs reporters from covering the ongoing crisis in Rakhine State.

More than 690,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar's Rakhine state into Bangladesh since rebel attacks sparked a military backlash last August.

The new Amnesty report, "Remaking Rakhine State", uses satellite imagery and interviews to point to a rapid increase in military infrastructure and other construction since the start of the year that researchers say amounts to a "land grab". Numerous villagers saw no option but to flee into Bangladesh, AI added.

"I am becoming more convinced that the crimes committed following 9 October 2016 and 25 August 2017 bear the hallmarks of genocide and call in the strongest terms for accountability", said Yanghee Lee, the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar.

Delivering her report to the Council in Geneva yesterday, Lee said that to date accountability for the crimes committed in Rakhine State following August 25 a year ago, and October 9, 2016, was elusive, adding that this must now be the focus of the global community's efforts to bring long-lasting peace, stability and democratisation to Myanmar.

Lee also warned of new offensives in the states of Kachin and Kayin, east of Rakhine.

Rohingyas are a Muslim minority ethnic group in Myanmar.

"What we are seeing directly contradicts what the Myanmar government has been saying".

The UN human rights chief said last week he strongly suspected acts of genocide had taken place, while Myanmar's national security adviser demanded "clear evidence".

Lee, who was speaking to the UN's Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday, also called for a body to be set up at Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, where most Rohingya have sought refuge, to compile evidence of human rights abuses in Myanmar.

She said against this background, the peace process appeared to be losing its momentum.
