Marcus Smart has thumb surgery, but could return in playoffs

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart will reportedly undergo surgery Friday to fix a torn ligament in his right thumb.

The Celtics tweeted Friday coach Brad Stevens would have news to share about Smart at 5 p.m. - two hours prior to tip-off against the Magic.

The injury occurred when Smart dove for a steal against Indiana Sunday (a game the Pacers won 99-97).

Until Smart is able to return, Terry Rozier, Shane Larkin and Abdel Nader will be the primary depth options at guard. When available, Smart has been one of Boston's most valuable defenders, but the Celtics will have now have to do without his services, at least for the foreseeable future.

He said, "It's more clear than ever that the president must not interfere with the special counsel's investigation in any way". The penalties include the first use of new powers passed by Congress a year ago to punish Moscow for election meddling.

However, Smart missed 11 games earlier this season after lacerating his right hand after punching a picture frame in the team hotel in Los Angeles.

Between his defense, unabashed shot-taking, and generally infectious hustle, Smart is a plus for the Celtics.

He will be a restricted free agent in the summer and it's unclear if Boston will look to tie him down to a long-term deal. He was sidelined for a month and said after he returned that the doctors who dislodged a large shard of glass said it had barely missed slicing tendons, an injury that would also have required season-ending surgery. But it remains to be seen whether or not the Celtics would match an offer for Smart.
