Mini "Beast from the East" to grip region this weekend


Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, Wicklow, Cavan and Monaghan will see the coldest conditions.

The Met Office warnings for snow and ice begin at 6pm on Friday for eastern Scotland and England, and run into all of Saturday, where nearly the entire country is included.

"This warning has been updated to remove much of Scotland (apart from the southeast) and parts of Northern Ireland whilst it has been extended to cover remaining parts of eastern England and the extreme southwest", a statement on the website read.

And Carlow Weather's Alan O'Reilly tweeted: "No backing away from the cold and snow showers for the weekend in the overnight charts".

The heaviest snow showers are expected across south-western areas, but conditions will ease throughout the day and there could be sunshine in some areas. Strong easterly winds will lead to drifting of snow.

Nicola Maxey, from the Met Office, said: "It's a good idea to keep an eye on the latest Met Office forecast and warnings for your area to ensure you're up to date with the latest situation". Becoming less cold by midweek.

Bitterly cold temperatures will feel as low as minus 10C today, with Met Office warnings in place across nearly the entire country and some areas likely to see up to 25cm of snow. "Marked wind chill will be another feature of the weather".

The warning says: "These [snow] showers may become more prolonged, particularly during the evening".

Actual temperatures may plummet to -6C (21F) and there could be transport chaos as two inches of snow gathers in some parts and up to eight inches on higher ground, he added.

The forecaster said: "Outbreaks of showery rain across north-Leinster and Ulster this morning will slowly clear through the day".

"Highs of 7C to 11C in light southeast breezes".

Scotland and the North East of England will be hit first, with temperatures falling to -3C (27F) tonight, before the front rolls across the rest of Britain.
