Trump Will be Getting Military Parade Down Pennsylvania Ave. Without Tanks

To minimize damage to Washington's streets, the parade will include only wheeled vehicles - and not the heavy military vehicles, like tanks, that line the streets of Paris on Bastille Day, according to a Pentagon memo released Friday and first obtained by CNN.

The parade will also feature period uniforms from the Old Guard Fife and Drum, a unit that parades in period uniform.

The White House's budget chief has said the event will cost taxpayers up to $30m (£21m).

The planned parade is meant to highlight the contributions veterans have made "throughout the history of the U.S. Military", the letter said, dating from the Revolutionary War to present day, "with an emphasis on the price of freedom".

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France", said a military official told The Washington Post on February 6.

The Joint Staff will be responsible for planning the parade and Northern Command, which oversees US troops in North America, will be responsible for executing it, according to the memo, which was signed by US Navy Capt. Hallock Mohler Jr., the executive secretary for the office of the secretary of defense.

The organizers call for the parade to display the changing role of women in the military, "from separate formations in World War II to today's integrated formations".

The parade is being planned for Veterans Day on November 11, although heavy tanks are prohibited from the procession since they might destroy the streets of Washington, D.C. First reports of plans for a parade came out last month when The Washington Post reported that Trump had met with high-ranking officials and told them he wanted a parade "like the one in France". The preliminary plan calls for Trump to be surrounded by Medal of Honor recipients and veterans in a viewing area. "It was two hours on the button, and it was military might, and I think a tremendous thing for France and for the spirit of France", Trump said in September.
