United States of America issues travel warning for Mexican resort town

The embassy says in an alert posted on its website that it received information Wednesday about a "security threat" in that city and US government employees are prohibited from going there.

Over the past year, there has been a dramatic increase in violence in and around Playa del Carmen, according to Eric Olson, an expert on security issues in Mexico at the Wilson Center's Latin American Program.

The move comes after the February 21 explosion on the ferry that links Playa del Carmen with the town of Cozumel.

In the alert post that it published on its website, the embassy said it received information about a security threat in the city on Wednesday.

"US citizens must have as much information as possible to make informed travel decisions", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement Thursday.

Bones discovered in 1940s may be Amelia Earhart
The data indicates that the bones have more similarity to Earhart than "to 99 percent of individuals in a large reference sample". Plenty of theories have floated around since the two vanished, including one that Earhart was eaten by fierce coconut crabs .

The United States embassy in Mexico City has closed its consular agency in Playa del Carmen and is barring employees from traveling there, following a ferry explosion back in February that injured 25 people including two Americans. In relation to this incident, USA employees were initially barred from taking ferries between Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel Island.

The state department is asking people traveling from America to avoid using those ferries and is prohibiting USA government personnel from using those ferry services. Both incidents are still under investigation.

Aside from Playa Del Carmen, the U.S. State Department has warned travelers to avoid five Mexican states due to crime. "We recommend USA citizens planning travel to the area consider this information before making travel decisions". Alcapulco is located in Guerrero.

Some tourist destinations have no warnings against them, including Mexico City, Cancun, and Los Cabos.
