The Gunners are now just three points behind their London rivals with six games left to play.

An action-packed encounter descended into chaos in the closing moments as Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny saw red for angry reactions, but while Arsenal, on course for the Europe League semi-finals, can savour a sixth straight win in all competitions, Hughes' imperilled side remain three points from safety.

Here is how we rated the players after the game.

He said: "It's just disappointing we couldn't get something out of the game".

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte slammed his side's profligacy in front of goal as their slim chances of a top-four Premier League finish slipped away with a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The result was an attack with less playmaking ability but a lot more pace, and they always looked a lot more unsafe on quick counters than when trying to orchestrate the normal slow build-up moves. Other teams in the league are more clinical.

Arsenal have won their last two Premier League games, both by a 3-0 scoreline.

Danny Welbeck headed home a late victor as Arsenal beat Southampton at the Emirates Stadium to leave the visitors in the Premier League bottom three.

Cedric's cross appeared easy for Arsenal to deal with, yet a mix-up between Shkodran Mustafi and Petr Cech allowed the alert Long to squeeze ahead of the former and stab the ball in from close range.

"My team-mates and the coach believe in me and, when you are not as good as you want to be, it is hard, so now I am happy and everything is alright".

But Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized with a fine finish shortly afterward, taking his tally to six goals in seven games since his winter transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

"I felt that he has shown in glimpses that he has big potential".

This was a free hit for them, but it was of paramount importance for Southampton, who were on the verge of claiming a valuable point in their battle against relegation, after opening the scoring through Shane Long and Charlie Austin coming on in the second half to equalise.

However, we rallied once again and restored our lead when Welbeck headed home at the far post following an Iwobi cross in the 81st minute.
