Commonwealth gives taxpayers extra day to file 2017 return

Those using paper to file and pay their taxes were unaffected by the system issues, the IRS said. The website said it was undergoing a "planned outage" beginning on Tax Day that would last until December 31, 9999 but said tax payments were still due on April 17, despite the system's inability to process them.

The IRS is unable to accept information transmitted from software providers, David Kautter, acting commissioner of the IRS, said after testifying at a congressional hearing on Tuesday.

Taxpayers do not need to do anything to receive this extra time and will not be penalized for filing on Wednesday.

The IRS has not determined the source of the problem, but the problem was resolved by early evening.

"We apologize for any inconvenience", the website said.

According to Kautter's prepared remarks, things were going well for IRS' IT systems this filing season until today. "But in general, electronic tracking is much easier for enforcement instead of having multiple copies of returns".

He didn't know how many people would be affected by the outage, but approximately 30 million people still need to file their returns. But past year, about 5 million tax returns were filed on the final day of the traditional tax season.

Tax day 2018 dawned with a technical glitch at the Internal Revenue Service, and ended with the federal government pushing Tuesday's filing deadline back by 24 hours.

In testimony before Congress delivered on Tuesday, National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olson said a lack of funding has prevented the IRS from updating its systems.

"The feds are giving until today and that means you can file an extension today", says tax accountant and attorney, Paul Mancinone.

While Direct Pay isn't the only way to make a payment, it's one of the few that doesn't cost extra. She said that returns filed while the IRS system was down were held until it was working again. The credit card payment systems available through the IRS website appear to be functioning, however there is a fee associated with making those payments.

The IRS emphasizes that failing to file taxes on time can result in fines and penalties.

"We'll make sure taxpayers have extensions once the system comes up to make sure they can use it and it in no way impacts people paying their taxes", he told reporters in New Hampshire. As such, it's no surprise the IRS payments system fails on the one day it's most needed.
