A joint statement released during the state visit of Oli said that the two leaders comprehensively reviewed the entire spectrum of multifaceted ties between the two countries.

Another key decision taken after talks between the visiting Oli and Modi was on the development of inland waterways. As a first step towards building the railway connectivity, the two sides agreed that India in consultation with Nepal will carry out preparatory survey work within one year.

India has promised greater support to its neighbor Nepal in a meeting between their prime ministers.

India and Nepal have a close and deep connection on the matters of defence and security.

"We want to maintain trustful (ties) with India and clear any suspicion in the bilateral relations", Oli had said.

Oli, who has developed closer ties with China with a known pro-Beijing stance, said he has come to India "with a mission" to take bilateral ties based on "principles of equality and justice" to newer heights but "commensurate with the realities of the 21st Century". Stating Nepal "wants to have trust-based relationship" with India, Oli said the goal of his visit was to explore ways to enhance cooperation to newer heights.

That model envisages India buying back a large chunk of the power it helped produce in Bhutan's rocky geography. "I renew my invitation to PM Modi for a visit [o Nepal] at the earliest", he said. We aim at improving waterways and railways with Nepal. Oli had also met President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday and was given a ceremonial reception at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

The senior government official said India would unroll the red carpet for Oli and his 53-member delegation during their three-day visit, but he would also hear about Delhi's "red lines", especially in the energy and security sectors.

Kathmandu and New Delhi on Saturday inked agreements that promise connectivity to land-locked Nepal over rail and river as the neighbours sought to move away from the stumbling blockade of 2015-16 that put a spoke in the bilateral relationship.
