Kim Jong Un Ready To Discuss Denuclearisation With US

The talks are to lay the groundwork for a meeting between Central Intelligence Agency Director Mike Pompeo and his North Korean counterpart ahead of the Trump-Kim talks.

Both sides have met several times in a third country to determine a location for the historic summit, USA officials told CNN.

Trump has traded barbs with the North Korean leader for much of his time in office as Pyongyang pursues development of nuclear weapons capable of hitting the United States.

North Korean officials have told their United States counterparts that Kim Jong Un is ready to discuss denuclearisation, an assurance that could pave the way for a meeting with President Donald Trump, reports said Sunday.

CNN reported that North Korea wants to have the meeting in its capital, Pyongyang, and that preparations are under way for a possible meeting between Pompeo and the head of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, North Korea's intelligence agency.

Cliff Kupchan, chairman of Eurasia Group risk consultancy, said North Korea's reported commitment to discuss "de-nuclearisation" significantly increases the chances that Mr Trump will meet Mr Kim. "What we will see next is the exchanges of presidential envoys between the United States and North Korea".

CNN quoted USA officials as saying that the summit will be held at the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar - a proposal that North Korea has already relayed to the United States, according Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun. Once a location is agreed upon the officials said that the date will be set and the agenda discussed in greater detail.
