Nintendo Switch Getting Classic Sega Games This Summer

Past titles will include Sonic the Hedgehog, Gain Ground, Thunder Force IV, Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Phantasy Star, with more being announced at a later date.

Sega Ages is a collection of Sega classic games that will be released for the Nintendo Switch this summer in Japan, the USA, and Europe.

Last year, AT Games, a business partner of Sega's and longtime manufacturer of Sega retro consoles announced its Sega Genesis Flashback. Shenmue I & II Will come to PS4 in 2018 in Japan, while the west will get it for Xbox One, PS4, and PC this year. Since then no console has been released by sega until the announcement of Mega Drive Mini.

Sega already gave hints that it would go back to manufacturing new gaming hardware soon, taking inspiration from Nintendo's successful return with the NES Classic and SNES Classic devices.

In addition to announcing that these classic Sega games are going to the Nintendo Switch, the Japanese game maker also revealed that it's working on a mini version of its Genesis console. The Switch versions will be developed by M2, who also programmed the Sega 3D Classics for 3DS. At present, you can buy a host of classic Sega games on Steam for $4.99.

European residents with long memories will remember the frustration of having to wait the additional two years until the Mega Drive arrived on United Kingdom shores. The programme is set to relaunch this summer, across Japan, North America and Europe, and is set to be the debut for a number of games outside of Japan. However, Sega managed to shake Nintendo's footing when it released a console called Sega Genesis or the Mega Drive. This is certainly a welcome addition to the Switch's lineup and should help tide fans over while we wait for Nintendo to re-release their own classics on the system.
