Regularly Having One Too Many Drinks Could Shorten Your Life

The study, published in the journal The Lancet, compared the health and drinking habits of around 600,000 current drinkers in 19 countries worldwide and controlled for age, smoking, history of diabetes, level of education and occupation. In a day, many people can drink far more which is unsafe for health. But in the USA, 100 grams is equivalent to what's in seven 12-ounces cans of beer, 5-ounce glasses of wine, or 1.5-ounce shots of rum, gin or other distilled spirits. The risk of a stroke was 14 percent higher; heart failure 9 percent, and the risk of a fatal aortic aneurysm rose by 15 percent.

Ever since 1991, when Morley Safer raised a glass of red wine and told millions of 60 Minutes viewers that it might be a health elixir, Americans have taken it on faith that a nightly tipple is good for the ticker.

Just think how easy it is to sink six pints of nice, cold lager on a hot summer's day, or to work your way through a few glasses of wine after a long day.

"This study has shown that drinking alcohol at levels which were believed to be safe is actually linked with lower life expectancy", as well as other health problems, study co-author Dr. Dan G. Blazer II, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at Duke University, said in a statement. English doctors conducted a study which determined the impact on the human body different doses of alcohol.

Scientists at Cambridge University from the United Kingdom has managed to calculate what dose of alcohol is safe for the human body and will not harm his health.

Tim Chico, is professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Sheffield.

"Although non-fatal heart attacks are less likely in people who drink, this benefit is swamped by the increased risk of other forms of heart disease including fatal heart attacks and stroke".

Very light drinking seemed to have a small protective effect against non-fatal heart attacks.

Dr Wood said: "Alcohol consumption is associated with a slightly lower risk of non-fatal heart attacks but this must be balanced against the higher risk associated with other serious - and potentially fatal - cardiovascular diseases".

They found people who drank the equivalent of about five to 10 drinks a week could shorten their lives by up to six months.

The data show the similar result of men and women in the amount of alcohol consumption. The study involved almost 600 thousand people who each week used from 100 to 350 ml of alcohol, reports the with reference to Browser.

To get there, they analyzed 83 studies on alcohol consumption pulled from a variety of worldwide studies spanning nearly 50 years and 19 countries, allowing them to compare the effects on multiple different "subtypes in current drinkers of alcohol".

Canada and Sweden have guidelines similar to those in the US set by the Department of Agriculture.

"Recommended limits in Italy, Portugal and Spain are almost 50 percent higher than this, and in the US, the upper limit for men is nearly double", the researchers found.

Of course, you can be sure many will not be happy to read about these findings.

That's less than what's recommended in many countries.
