But January's reading was also revised lower and for the first quarter as a whole, the PMI was its lowest in a year, though above its average since Britain exited recession in the third quarter of 2009 following the financial crisis.

The March's reading signalled a modest improvement in the health of the sector, which was the weakest since November a year ago.

Indian goods manufacturers raised their output for the eighth successive month during March. That said, the rate of job creation eased to a seven-month low.

India's manufacturing sector activity fell to a five-month low in March, as new business orders rose at a slower pace, and firms showed little appetite for recruitment, says a monthly survey.

March's 59.3 reading signaled that new orders, production and employment are all still growing, while the supplier deliveries are slowing at slower rate and the backlog of orders was more or less the same. Where an increase was registered, firms linked this to improvements in market demand from both domestic and worldwide markets.

However, Williamson noted that recent tariff announcements by the Trump administration were already reported to have added to inflationary pressures, and have led to the stockpiling of goods expected to rise further in price in coming months. Other countries covered by the survey also saw solid rates of growth in the month.

The report showed that inventory holdings were broadly stable during the month. During the first two months of the year, construction spending increased 4.4% from the same time a year earlier.
