House Speaker Paul Ryan announced Wednesday morning he will not be seeking re-election.

"I'm thankful for all Paul has done for the NRCC and am confident he has set us on a path to keep our majority", he added.

When Ryan was first elected in 1998, he was exclusively 28 years earlier.

The chairman of the NRCC, Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, praised Ryan as a fighter for change and as a key leader in the battle to pass a comprehensive tax reform package past year.

Newsmax White House correspondent John Gizzi said on Wednesday that McCarthy, who withdrew from the race for speaker in '15 and helped convince Ryan to run, has signaled he is not interested in becoming speaker if Republicans retain the majority this November.

Speaker Ryan touted his legislative victories as leader of the House, namely tax cuts and increased funding for the military. According to Buck, Ryan is now ready to spend some time focusing on family. Ryan told them that serving as speaker has been the professional honor of his life, and he thanked them for the trust they placed in him.

Ryan also said he has been assured by the White House that Trump does not intend to fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation, or Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who oversees Mueller's probe. That we fashion an agenda, that we run on that agenda, that we win an election, and that we execute that agenda.

Most Republicans in Wisconsin said the focus will be on whether Vos, the Assembly speaker since 2013, would get in.

Ryan has said he fully expects that this will be his last job in elected politics and the source familiar with the speaker's decision would not discuss Ryan's plans or next steps.

"I've given this job all of the issues I had, and I've no regrets in any method for having accepted this accountability", talked about Ryan, as he launched he would not search re-election on April 11.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee said Mr Ryan's departure was an ominous sign for Republicans, months away from nationwide elections. "With his newfound political freedom, I hope the Speaker uses his remaining time in Congress to break free from the hard-right factions of his caucus that have kept Congress from getting real things done".

The speaker called extended family and a few close friends Tuesday night and alerted a few staff.

"You have to start with Robin Vos as the one who decides whether or not he runs", said Brandon Scholz, a longtime GOP strategist in the state and former Wisconsin Republican Party executive director. His campaign has support from the national party, and it said it raised US$4.75 million through the end of March.

But there was also sniping from the Democratic side.
