Andhra Boat Capsizes: Navy's Teams Sent For Rescue Efforts, 23 Still Missing

The boat was carrying 44 people across the Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh state when strong winds flipped it over late Tuesday, prompting a massive rescue operation including navy helicopters and dozens of divers.

Of them, 20 passengers got off at Manturu village while the boat continued its onward journey to Rajamahendravaram with the remaining passengers, the release issued by the Information and Public Relations Department commissioner said. According to Reddy, the driver of the boat had said there were 25-26 passengers onboard, however, the actual count of the passengers was 40.

Giving an update about rescue operation, the officer said, "We have been able to trace the location of the boat". Many people are feared drowned in the boat tragedy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness over the incident. He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims for those still missing. "I pray for the safety of those missing".

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to undertake rescue operations on a war footing.

The boat was reportedly blown over by heavy gales at around 5pm local time (12.30pm BST).

East Godavari district collector Karthikeya Mishra told reporters at the scene that since the launch was stuck in the sand, the rescue workers were making efforts to tie the rope to the railing to pull it horizontally. My thoughts are with the families of those killed or still missing in this tragedy.

The boat apparently belongs to Laxmi Venkateshwara boat services and the owner Khaja Mohinuddeen has surrendered at the Devipatnam police station following the incident, ETV reported.
