Birnin Gwari attack: 45 corpses recovered

Members of the Birnin-Gwari Vanguard for Security and Good Governance, who pleaded for anonymity, said the gunmen came in from Zamfara State.

Police spokesperson Mukhtar Aliyu told reporters in Kaduna city that three additional police mobile units had been deployed to track down the killers.

The statement said a search-and-rescue operation continues in the area.

Fighting between armed bandits and militiamen left 45 dead in northern Nigeria, police and a local militia said on Sunday, amid escalating rural violence often involving cattle rustling, robbery and kidnappings.

According to residents, the bandits were shooting sporadically and burning down houses in the community.

Among the deceased also include children, many of whose parents escaped the assault by the bandits of Zamfara forests, local media reports said.

Other sources from the local vigilance groups said they were in Gwaska with the military at about 7pm but the commander asked the soldiers to retreat because of darkness. "Also, the vigilantes made u-turn with a handful of survivors and injured people".

As a way to curb and completely end the activities of bandits in Birnin-Gwari a recently attacked region in Kaduna, Governor El-Rufai has said that the Nigerian Army will station a permanent army battalion around the area.

Following the latest attack, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, yesterday, evening announced that the Federal Government had agreed to deploy a permanent army battalion in the troubled area.

In a tweet, Abubakar wrote: "My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and the people of Birnin Gwari".

He expressed concern over the incessant attacks, saying he had been engaging with the Federal Government on the matter.
