Fernando Alonso and McLaren F1 happy with qualifying results in Barcelona

Alonso, who last took to the top step of an F1 podium at this race back in 2013, may be sixth in the standings with 28 points, but that tally says more about his racecraft rather than the speed of his McLaren.

McLaren's Fernando Alonso says he's happy after qualifying 8th for the Spanish GP but admits the team need to push on with development of the auto.

"[I'm] definitely happy with the step forward for this race", Alonso said. The fans are not giving you extra performance because they can't push the vehicle, but they can motivate a little bit more so we seem to always perform a little bit better here. "The correlation with the factory so we just need more new parts as soon as possible".

The Spaniard narrowly missed out on being the "best of the rest", qualifying just behind Kevin Magnussen's Haas. The top guys are still too high up so we need to close that gap, but I'm pleased that all the updates we brought here seem to be delivering as we expected.

"Probably the downside of this position is still the gap to the top six". "At the same time, I think it has been a very positive start to the season". This auto was supposed to be the Australian GP package but we have brought it here to Spain.

"Conditions out there have been tricky all weekend with a lot of cars going off, so tomorrow we need to be sharp".

Putin, Erdogan stress preservation of Iran nuclear deal
In addition, the leaders of Russian Federation and Turkey discussed issues of the Syrian settlement and implementation of key bilateral projects.

"That delay, on the first improvement, and having it not at the first races, having it here, probably put us in a hard position in the first races. I'm happy for that, happy for the support and hopefully tomorrow we give them a good result".

"I'm attempting two world championships at the same time", he said, referring to F1 and the sports vehicle world endurance championship, which includes the classic Le Mans 24-Hours race.

Alonso is combining Formula One with the World Endurance "super season", the Le Mans 24 Hours race this year and next, and was in the winning Toyota at last Saturday's Six Hours of Spa.

"Always I come here and it's bigger and bigger and the people are still as excited as every other year".

"This year, for example, the track, they put new asphalt last winter so it's still a challenge for all of us to understand the best set-up and how you get around this new track, he explained". Watch the Spanish GP exclusively live on Sky Sports F1 on Sunday.
