Liverpool's Emre Can has been left out of Germany's provisional 27-man squad for the World Cup, while injured Manuel Neuer is included. "We want to observe him ourselves to form an impression and will be able to do that at the training camp", Loew said of the side's preparations in South Tyrol, Italy, from May 23.

Loew opted for Petersen over Bayern Munich forward Sandro Wagner, giving the Freiburg player his first call-up to the national team after an excellent season. "He has little worldwide experience but he will grow with the task", Loew said.

Low has until June 4 to submit his final 23-man squad that will represent Germany in Russian Federation and attempt to become the first back-to-back World Cup winners since Brazil in 1962.
