Hero teacher in school shooting released from hospital

The ex-college football player-turned-high school teacher who player hero during a school shooting Friday in IN has been released from the hospital.

Higgins told WTHR-TV that her son was shaken up but that he knew little of what happened.

"Then he started screaming to call 911 and get out and we realized he had gotten him to the ground and the gun was out of his hands", another student said.

A woman who identified herself as Seaman's mother posted on Facebook that her son was shot three times and was in surgery. Jason Seaman was released from Indiana University Health on Saturday (May 26) afternoon, CBS affiliate WTTV reports.

"[The gunman] took about four to five maybe six shots, one of them hitting a girl that was about 10 feet from me", a student who asked not to be identified told CBS4 in Indianapolis.

Jeremy Seaman, who now lives in Arizona, said his brother was a defensive end for Southern Illinois University's football team and has never been a person to run away. Jowitt said the classroom is where the shooting took place, and the situation was resolved extremely quickly.

Seaman's brother, Jeremy, said he wasn't surprised his brother interveaned. He added, "I want to let everyone know that I was injured but am doing great".

He suited up for Southern Illinois from 2007-2010 before becoming a teacher.

Seaman has been a science teacher for almost four years and a 7th-grade football coach for two years.

"Jason was one of those guys who was willing to go above and beyond and do whatever he could for the team", Flyger said in a press release, "The reason you get into coaching is to work with guys like him".

"I'm really grateful for him [Seaman] to be there because without him, I'm not sure if all of us would have made it", Carter Sutherland, a 12-year-old student, told FOX59 Indianapolis. She also noted specifically where he was shot: once through the abdomen, once in the hip, and once in the forearm.

Jason Seaman has been discharged from Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis following the shooting. "You could always trust him to do the right thing".

On May 18, eight students and two teachers were killed at a rural high school in Texas. Asked to elaborate, IN state police superintendent Doug Carter said: "Wait till one day we can tell you that story".

News 18 continues to follow the tragedy at a middle school in Noblesville.

After Friday's shooting, Carly Novel, a Marjory Stoneman student, tweeted: "Noblesville Middle School students I am so sorry".
