Local elections: Conservatives hold seats, Labour antisemitism concerns, Ukip 'crumbles'

More than 4,000 seats were up for for grabs.

For UKIP, the highs of 2014 seem in the very distant past, with the party losing 84 seats by 6.30am and retaining just two.

Labour's leader in Amber Valley has expressed his disappointment at the outcome of Thursday's election, but remains optimistic about his party's chances next year.

Labour have gained Plymouth, but they've lost Derby to no overall control. "These aren't the results of a party that's about to storm the next general election".

He said: All the hype in the media about Labour gains in certain boroughs was never going to be the case.

The Tories also no longer have control of Trafford in Greater Manchester.
