Maryland Governor Candidate Kevin Kamenetz Dies of Heart Attack

Kevin Kamenetz a Democratic candidate in the Maryland gubernatorial race, died suddenly Thursday morning following a cardiac arrest.

Kamenetz was the youngest of five children, a Johns Hopkins graduate who went on to study law at University of Baltimore School of Law.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz was one of the leading candidates in the Democratic primary.

Larry Hogan ordered that all Maryland flags be lowered until sunset Thursday in honor of Kamenetz.

In 2010, he was elected as Baltimore County's 12th County Executive, and was reelected in 2014. "In the hard days to come, we will provide any support we possibly can to the Kamenetz family and the citizens of Baltimore County".

The county's administrative officer Fred Homan has taken on the role of "acting county executive effective immediately", Mohler told The Baltimore Sun.

Kamenetz consistently polled among the top three candidates and had raised more money than anyone else in the field. They include Montgomery County Executive Rushern Baker and former NAACP President Ben Jealous. "He dedicated his life to public service, to making a difference and he helped to move Maryland forward". She was the executive director of the New York-based Center for Working Families before joining Kamenetz's campaign. Here's how local political figures, leaders and organizations were reacting.

"MD and I both just lost a friend", he added. "My sincerest thoughts and prayers are with Jill and their two sons".

"Kevin Kamenetz's passing is a tremendous loss for Maryland".

Kevin Kamenetz is survived by his wife, Jill, and sons Karson and Dylan.
