Michigan State University Pays $500M To Larry Nassar's Victims

After serving that sentence, he will serve two sentences - one that's 40 to 175 years and another that's 40 to 125 years - in two MI counties for a total of 10 sexual assault charges.

"Nassar's tenticles went outside of the university as well", says White, who adds that MSU failed to act after receiving reports of Nassar's behavior, allowing him to continue the abuse elsewhere.

The former USA Gymnastics doctor, who also served at an on-campus clinic at Michigan State, earlier this year received two prison sentences of up to 125 years and up to 175 years after hundreds of young women testified about decades of sexual abuse at his hands.

Out of the settlement, $425 million (£314 milion/€360 million) will be paid to current claimants. It also doesn't say how Michigan State will pay the bill.

Nassar treated campus athletes and scores of young gymnasts at his Michigan State office, building an global reputation while working at the same time for USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians.

"I think the number being so large sends a message that is undeniable, that something really bad happened here and that Michigan State owns it", lawyer, John Manly, who represented numerous 332 victims, told The New York Times.

While numerous claimants are former MSU athletes, not all of them encountered Nassar at the school.

If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, you can seek help by calling the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673).

On stage were representatives of 19 countries, but only ten of them will fight in the final, which will take place this Saturday. Ireland has made it through to the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest - for the first time since 2013.

The Michigan State settlement is only part of several more ongoing legal battles related to Nassar. The deal applies only to Michigan State University and MSU individuals sued in litigation. "We're going to keep advocating for the real policy changes that we need".

Women came forward alleging they'd complained about Nassar to Michigan State officials as far back as 1997, and in 2014, a university title IX investigation cleared Nassar, ruling that a woman alleging sexual assault had misinterpreted legitimate medical treatment.

Martha Karolyi told United States news program "Dateline NBC" last month that Nassar conned her and her husband in much the same way that he conned the parents and coaches of the girls he abused.

"A successful resolution to the litigation is a positive step in moving us all forward", MSU board Chairman Brian Breslin said in a statement.

Michigan State's settlement dwarfs the settlements paid out by Penn State, another Big Ten school, to the victims of Jerry Sandusky in terms of volume, but not ratio.

Gold medalists Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas and McKayla Maroney are among those who say Nassar abused them under the guise of medical treatment.

The scandal rocked Michigan State, leading to the resignation of President Lou Anna Simon on January 24 and athletic director Mark Hollis two days later. It's also unclear where the money will come from.
