'Murdered' Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko is alive

"We call on Ukrainian authorities to thoroughly, effectively, and independently investigate the killing of Arkady Babchenko, and to find all those responsible for this brutal, silencing crime", CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said.

Mr Babchenko told the news conference he'd previously fled Russian Federation after receiving death threats.

However, he turned up at the presser today with Ukrainian officials who said the country's Security Service faked the journalist's death in an attempt to gather evidence on Russian agents in Ukraine.

Authorities announced on Tuesday that Babchenko's wife discovered him with gunshot wounds at their apartment and he died en route to a Kiev hospital.

The journalist apparently did not tell his wife that the murder had been staged. "Special apologies to my wife".

Babchenko left Russian Federation after he criticized the Kremlin in a Facebook post in 2017. Groysman added that Babchenko was "a true friend of Ukraine", due to his commitment to reveal "the truth about Russian aggression".

He served in the Russian army during the first separatist war in Chechnya during the 1990s and later became a journalist.

"I was lucky. A second birthday, it turns out", Mr Babchenko wrote. "I'm sorry you had to go through this but there was no other way".

Kyiv police spokeswoman Oksana Blyshchyk said police received an emergency call on May 29 from doctors who said a woman called them to say she had "found her husband at home in a pool of blood".

Babchenko, a former soldier in the Chechen war who became one of Russia's best-known war correspondents, had left his homeland fearing for his life after criticising Russian policy in Ukraine and Syria.

He faced backlash after commenting on the crash of a Russian plane transporting the world-famous military choir Alexandrov Ensemble en route to Syria.

The news quickly spread around the world and appeared, for the moment at least, to worsen the already strained relationship between Moscow and Kiev.

Kiev has in recent years seen a number of deadly attacks on high-profile journalists and politicians.
