Oculus Go now available, standalone mobile VR for £199

If you've been keeping up the VRFocus' coverage then you'll know that Oculus Go is fairly big news, with the company looking to offer a higher quality virtual reality (VR) experience than smartphone compatible headsets with a dedicated device that's not only affordable but also easy to use. Barra has reappeared again this time in a new unboxing video for Oculus Go.

Several users noted that the 64gb would likely cost more than the $199 32gb version.

The Oculus Go is the company's first stab at a standalone virtual reality headset, with all of the necessary hardware built in. The Oculus Go is a $200 value if Facebook hands out the 32GB model.

With over 1,000 apps, games and experiences available at launch, there will be plenty to play when your Oculus Go arrives. It's still a 3DoF controller, but it feels more robust than the laser pointer with buttons that mobile headsets have had previously. The audio output is integrated into the headset.

You might not get a Go for free, but you can still watch along to the keynote. But it stands out because it does not require a separate computer - a smartphone locked into the device or a PC to tether to - to operate. In the course of showing it to a friend, that was enough time for him to decide that maybe he didn't want to try that app that much after all. The standalone VR headset was announced way back in October past year, and more recently, signs pointed to a proper launch at Facebook's F8 conference this week.

Overall though, the headset is far more high-quality than any other on-the-market standalone headset I've tried to date, costing hundreds of dollars less than most of that competition as well.

That architecture has helped Facebook and Oculus keep the price down, of course, but it has also forced some compromises.
