World Press Freedom Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference.

Amnesty International also released a statement to mark the day and remember the slain journalists.

The report also noted a total of 20 cases of attacks on media houses.

Reporters without borders put out questioners to experts who answer questions on the independence of the media.

The reports also pointed out that the state poses the most serious threat to media with 39 per cent of incidents, as compared to other actors such as militant groups, political parties, religious groups and criminals.

He urged journalist to seek redress in courts of law since assault is a criminal act. Mahmoud Hussein, an Al Jazeera journalist has spent more than 500 days imprisoned in Egypt.

"Media practitioners should uphold ethical and professional standards, by desisting from circulating fake news".
