Saudi coalition airstrike kills 38 Houthis

The Houthis have confirmed that an overnight attack took place but gave no details on casualties.

The Saudi-led coalition imposed a total blockade on Yemen's ports in November in retaliation for cross-border Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia.

Yemen's Houthi movement has fired ballistic missiles at what it called "economic and vital targets" in the southern Saudi province of Jizan, where Saudi authorities said a man was killed by debris from the projectiles.

He was the most senior official to be killed by the Western-backed alliance, which had offered a $20 million reward for any information that led to his capture.

Saudi state media is reporting an airstrike by a kingdom-led coalition in Yemen's capital has killed two Shiite rebel leaders and dozens of their militiamen.

Shortly after the funeral began, the rebels said they had launched eight ballistic missiles at "economic and vital targets" in Saudi Arabia's Jizan province.

Spokesman for the Civil Defense Directorate in the Jazan District Colonel Yahya Abdullah Al-Qahtani said that the civil defense teams received a report on the fall of fragments of military projectiles launched by Houthi elements from inside Yemeni territory towards the governorate of Samta, resulting in the death of a citizen.

The coalition has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months, with Houthis reportedly launching ballistic missiles and drones into Saudi Arabia and attacking coalition warships.

Houthi militias have been targeting various Saudi cities, mainly those near the Saudi-Yemeni border.

The coalition intervened in the Yemeni conflict in March 2015 to roll back the Iranian-allied Shiite Houthi rebels and support the internationally-recognized President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. The coalition says it does not target civilians.

Saudi Arabia fears its regional archrival, Iran, is backing the Houthis in a bid to gain a strategic foothold on the Arabian Peninsula, a view shared by Washington.
