Tragic day - Himanshu Roy, one of Maharashtra police's best officers, shoots himself

Tragic day - Himanshu Roy, one of Maharashtra police's best officers, shoots himself

He was an asset for the police force. Roy was born on 23 June 1963. He arrested Vijay Palande, a man involved in four murders, including that of TV producer Karan Kakkad and Arunkumar Tikku, father of actor Anuj Tikku, the double murder of airport union leader Anup Das and his father, and another unknown person.

In 2015, Roy along with other officer complained of poor treatment and nepotism in transfers by seniors. He tried to study medicine and follow in his father's footsteps after Class 12, but gave it up soon and went on to become a chartered accountant.

Roy was, however, interested in pursuing a career in civil services. The region was then tense in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition. After a stint in Ahmednagar, Roy was posted in Mumbai in March 2001.

The prosecutor recalled that through the last discussions from the 26/11 Mumbai attack case, Mr Roy, afterward combined commissioner of police, sat through the discussions.

Speaking to Mid-Day, Nargarkar said Roy was cured of the disease. Nashik-based doctor Raj Nagarkar, the oncologist who was treating Roy, said no cancerous traces were found in his body on 30 April, the last time the police officer underwent a PET examination. Roy, the additional director general of police (Establishment), was suffering from cancer, according to News 18. An avid reader, P G Wodehouse was among his favourite authors.

The incident took place in his Malabar Hills residence. "We all tried our best to deserve the trust he had in us", the officer added. Today when Himanshu is no more, I can recall the smile on his face when he arrived at my house, suggesting I brief the media that the Dey murder case had been cracked. "We were all in awe of him. Some even grew a moustache like him and wore tight fitting shirts", said an officer. Roy also consulted doctors in the USA and Portugal, who could not offer much help either.

Roy was 1988 batch Maharashtra cadre IPS officer.
