We’re Having Talks with North Korea about ‘Reinstating the Summit’

"I believe one of the keys to the peace and stability of the peninsula is the US-DPRK relations, and a summit between them is essential". "The Korean train for peace is moving and if the USA wants to be a part of it, they better get moving".

After years of tension over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program, Kim and Trump agreed this month to hold what would be the first meeting between a serving United States president and a North Korean leader.

The details of the now scrapped talks were unclear. "So I'm confident that peace and security on the Korean peninsula can be maintained". He said everyone plays games.

In Seoul, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who had urged Trump at a White House meeting on Tuesday not to let a rare opportunity slip away, said on Thursday he was "perplexed" by the cancellation. "And if they are they are ready to do that then ... we're certainly ready to have those conversations".

"They know that if they start resuming testing all of that goodwill, all of that change in Kim's reputation, all of that will go out the window very quickly", she said.

Earlier Friday, in a tweet, he had called the North's reaction to his letter canceling the summit "warm and productive". U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters diplomats were "still at work" and said Trump had just sent a note out on the summit, which could be back on "if our diplomats can pull it off".

Experts warned that cancelling the meeting could have knock-on effects, especially among allies already rattled by Trump's unpredictability.

It was personally addressed to Mr Kim.

Kim Kye Gwan, first vice minister of foreign affairs, issued a statement earlier on Friday saying North Korea was "willing to give the USA time and opportunities" to reconsider talks.

"It's a fortunate thing that the possibility of the North Korea-U.S. dialogue is still alive without being terminated", the South's Yonhap news agency quoted spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom as saying.

Reuters reported earlier this week the team was scheduled to discuss the agenda and logistics for the summit with North Korean officials.

What Mr Trump was referring to?

A recent survey commissioned by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, however, found that South Koreans were more concerned about air pollution than Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

But despite the will on all sides for the summit to go forward, a fundamental gap exists between the United States' and North Korea's respective roadmaps to denuclearization.

Ms Choe, who has been involved in several diplomatic interactions with the USA over the past decade, said the North would not "beg" for dialogue and warned of a "nuclear showdown" if diplomacy failed.

A senior White House official said the North had reneged on its promises ahead of the summit, including a pledge to allow global inspectors to monitor its explosive destruction of its nuclear test site. They stressed, however, there was a "backdoor that's open still".

"It is best to treat this all like a reality TV show", Vipin Narang, a North Korea expert and professor of worldwide relations at MIT, wrote Friday on Twitter.

Mr. Trump's announcement set off a head-spinning series of maneuvers from governments.

The president's surprise exit from the planned talks on Thursday had capped weeks of high-stakes brinkmanship between the two unpredictable leaders over nuclear negotiating terms for their unprecedented sit-down.
