Woman Dead, Others Injured in Explosion at Aliso Viejo Medical Building

The explosion occurred at about 1 p.m. and caused damage to the first floor of the two-story building, which was under construction.

Investigators believe the Tuesday blast, which happened in Orange County, may have come from a package, according to the Associated Press.

Authorities had not found an explosive device Tuesday night but were searching through debris that was left after the blast.

The explosion, in a normally tranquil South Orange County city, prompted the evacuation of nearby businesses and a school filled with children, officials said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the incident.

Nothing indicates there were any threats made before the blast, which appeared to be concentrated in a suite on the first floor of the office building, Sawyer said.

Dave Sawyer says authorities haven't determined whether the explosion was accidental or intentional.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and three others were injured, OCFA said.

FBI spokesman Mike Gifford said the cause of the explosion is still unknown and the agency has sent resources to help with the investigation, which is being led by Orange County Sheriff's Department.

Three people were injured in the blast, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

Mary McWilliams told the Orange County Register she arrived for an appointment to find smoke surrounding the area and vehicle alarms going off. Fire officials say a third person suffered smoke inhalation.

McWilliams said she saw two burned women staggering out of the building, covered in ash and soot.

Officials reportedly said the person who died is a woman and was near to the source of the explosion, The Orange County Register reported. Surrounding buildings have also been evacuated. The other woman was bleeding from her head.

He explained that authorities were being extra cautious because they "don't see explosions in commercial buildings" often.

Braun said the two survivors had critical injuries "that were consistent with an explosion, but not necessarily consistent with a bomb".
