CHAMPS: Capitals defeat Vegas 4-3, claim franchise's first Stanley Cup

It was a thrilling game bound to be replayed in Washington for generations, but there was only confusion for a solid chunk of the final two minutes in the series.

The championship is the first by a Washington professional sports team in the NFL, NBA, NHL or Major League Baseball since the Redskins won the Super Bowl on January 26, 1992.

It was the first time since the first period of Game 2 that the Golden Knights were ahead in the series. Inspirational. An example of the power of unity. I knew he wants it so bad and this organization wants it so bad.

The Capitals arch nemesis, the Pittsburgh Penguins, took the eventual champs to six games Just like the Jackets did in their first round matchup. "We just won it". We fight through it and we worked so hard through all the years. "We didn't get those type of bounces".

The Knights have never lost four consecutive games in their inaugural season. "This is one memory that I don't think he's going to forget".

"That was a toss-up for me, I thought they were neck and neck if you ask me who gets the Conn Smythe, I thought that's gonna be a tough choice", Trotz said.

That sent the Capitals to the Stanley Cup Final, where they were once again underdogs, this time against an expansion team.

However, Ovechkin, one of the game's most decorated players, is still missing a Stanley Cup from his resume.

"Getting to score the game victor", said Eller. "I've never seen the commitment from start to finish like we had here". Since then, the Golden Knights have helped the Hawleys during their grieving process. It was the Caps who found a way to win in the third period when things seemed to be going the Knights way.

Rudy Giuliani: Trump ‘probably’ has the power to pardon himself
In it they say he has absolute power as U.S. legal chief to end investigations, or "even exercise his power to pardon". When asked whether Trump has the power to pardon himself , Giuliani replied, "he probably does ".

The tally survived a review, even though the Washington Capitals unsuccessfully challenged David Perron's tying goal for goalie interference.

After striving through 13 of his franchise's 43 seasons, the Russian superstar and the long-suffering Capitals are sitting on top of hockey for the very first time. If you watched the reaction of his teammates when he got the Cup, that speaks volumes about how guys feel about him. The Knights won their division, and were 12-3 in the playoffs coming into the Final, confounding the hockey experts at every turn. And 45 minutes before the scheduled practice, with nothing in front of them but a fresh sheet of ice, the fans broke into a chant of "Go Knights Go!"

Nicklas Backstrom - The Capitals centre, playing with an injured hand, was on the wrong end of shot metrics (4 for, 19 against, 17.4 CF%, 0-8 scoring chances) and missed an empty net that could have sealed the deal late in the third period, but also had a ridiculous pass to set up Alex Ovechkin for Washington's second goal.

Not this time. Devante Smith-Pelly, who came to Washington's training camp last fall without a contract, tied it at 9:52 of the third as he tumbled to the ice.

"It means everything, you couldn't write the story better", said Lars Eller, who scored the winning goal.

It was truth, not fiction.

Ovechkin scored on a power play in the second period of Game 5's 4-3 win on Thursday night. Despite a fairytale season that ended just three wins short of the ultimate prize, Vegas' loss was crushing to the players who put so much into the year.

"I think this is just like a dream", said Ovechkin, flanked by the two trophies during a post-game news conference.

They are champions, at last.
