Methodists, prosecutors scold Sessions over border policy

A bipartisan group of more than 70 former US attorneys is calling on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to reverse the Trump administration's policy of prosecuting all people who cross the border illegally, saying it is "dangerous, expensive, and inconsistent" with the values of the Justice Department.

"I have critics from a lot of different areas". "I just simply said to my Christian friends, you know the United States has laws and I believe that Paul was clear in Romans that we should try to follow the laws of government of which we are a part".

The comments drew rebukes from many in the religious community, including members of Sessions' own Methodist faith. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said the USA will not turn into a migrant camp. "And like a majority of Americans, we are appalled that your Zero Tolerance policy has resulted in the unnecessary trauma and suffering of innocent children", the prosecutors wrote on Medium in a post published Tuesday morning. But there's a catch: his new plan is to lock up parents and their children together, indefinitely. Immigration officials must assess their claims, which can be time-consuming, but federal courts have ruled that the children can be held no longer than 20 days.

Under the policy, adults suspected of crossing the US border illegally are sent to federal jails or other detention centers to await prosecution.

The president has tried to blame Democrats for what he calls - and members of his cabinet defend as - a law that requires separating children from their parents, but as PoltiFact reports, there is no such law. "What we meant to do was to make sure that adults who bring children into the country are charged with the crime they've committed, instead of giving that special group of adults immunity from prosecution", Sessions told CBN.

"It hasn't been good and the American people don't like the idea that we are separating families", Sessions said on CBN.

"This is really extreme, it's nothing like we have seen before", said Michelle Brané, director of Migrant Rights and Justice at the Women's Refugee Commission, a New York-based non-governmental organization that is helping some of these people. Under your policy, federal prosecutors in those Districts must charge, arrest and detain the individual in each and every "illegal entry" case under 8 U.S.C. § 1325 (a). "As former United States Attorneys, we also emphasize that the Zero Tolerance policy is a radical departure from previous Justice Department policy, and that it is risky, expensive, and inconsistent with the values of the institution in which we served", they wrote in the letter posted online Tuesday.

On Monday, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper banned state employees and resources from supporting any federal practices that separates families due to their immigration status, saying the Trump administration's policy was offensive and ran counter to Coloradan values.

"Are you considering this a deterrent?"
