Mo Salah considering quitting Egypt national team

That has been followed by Kadyrov granting honorary citizenship to Salah at a banquet on Friday night, as reported by Sky Sports.

The Egypt team have been based in Chechnya, and the Liverpool star was pictured with leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who subsequently made the Egyptian an "honorary citizen" of the Chechen Republic.

Sources in his homeland say that Salah, whose heroics helped Egypt qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1990, is furious about how he's been used for political gain during the tournament in Russian Federation.

"It is a deserved honour", Kadyrov wrote on social media, adding that Salah's presence had ignited "unprecedented interest in football" in the region.

After initially clashing over the improper use by the Egyptian FA of Salah's image rights, the former Roma and Chelsea man has reportedly expressed his displeasure at being "used politically and is [now] considering ending his affiliation with the Egyptian national team as a result".

Images of Salah and the controversial leader quickly circulated online before the World Cup began, with Kadyrov visibly grasping the hand of the Egypt star as a show of solidarity.

Reports that Salah could refuse to play in Egypt's final group game was rubbished by the player's agent and Salah himself.

Ramy's comment on waiting until the final game tomorrow against Saudi Arabia passes is intriguing, given the rumours a week ago after the second game claiming that Salah wanted to immediately depart the global set-up.

"Mo is still with us now and he is happy in the camp. He is training well and that means no problem".

Due to an injury inflicted by Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos in the UEFA Champions League Final, Salah was not fit to play in Egypt's World Cup opener, a loss to Uruguay.

Salah was embroiled in a personal image rights debacle with the Egyptian FA before the tournament in Russian Federation began and is apparently considering retiring from worldwide football.

His World Cup experience has been traumatic on two fronts, though.
