Trump tweet on Harley-Davidson move after tariff, European Union trade fight

"Live to ride, ride to live, Harley Davidson's", is engraved on this air cleaner cover.

US President Donald Trump continued his attacks on the legendary Harley-Davidson motorcycle company Wednesday, warning "we won't forget" after the firm said it planned to shift some manufacturing offshore.

The Milwaukee-based company said on Monday it will move production of motorcycles shipped to the European Union from the United States to its worldwide facilities and forecast that the trading bloc's tariffs - introduced as a counter to Trump's tariffs on some EU-produced metals - would cost the company $90 million to $100 million a year.

"Harley-Davidson should stay 100% in America, with the people that got you your success", Trump tweeted.

One day after the Wisconsin-based company said it was planning to shift some manufacturing overseas due to the European Union's tariffs in retaliation for United States duties, Trump accused Harley-Davidson of appropriating the trade war as an "excuse" for the move.

Renacci is a former owner of Harley-Davidson dealerships, but he didn't hold back when calling out the company for using the "excuse" of tariffs to start making some motorcycles overseas. "We won't forget, and neither will your customers or your now very HAPPY competitors!" On Wednesday, Trump again took to Twitter to urge the company not to move any of its operations overseas and warning "we won't forget" the decision. Trump then threatened the company "will be taxed like never before" if they follow through with the move. "Now they are trying to use the tariffs to excuse and deflect from that decision".

Harley-Davidson executives met with Trump at the White House a year ago after Trump canceled a visit to the company's headquarters in Milwaukee because protests had been planned. S&P's rating for Harley is A-minus - not sterling but in the top tier.

House Speaker Paul Ryan, whose district is home to some of Harley-Davidson's facilities, also pointed to the company as an American firm that would be a victor from tax reform.
