"Using that type of language is not professional, it's not called for, and I tell you, I was deeply disappointed to see this lack of professionalism on his part".

"My job was to send a signal of strength", Navarro said Tuesday at a Wall Street Journal event.

Before the apology, some USA lawmakers on Tuesday questioned the strong language the White House and Trump have used toward Canada in contrast to the praise he gave North Korea at Tuesday's summit in Singapore.

The president's surrogates also piled on during Sunday U.S. news shows, with Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro saying there was "a special place in hell" for Trudeau.

"And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", Navarro said. As iPolitics' Tim Naumetz reports, Alberta Conservative MP Glen Motz blitzed 20 radio stations and journalists in his home province on the weekend slamming two Liberals on the Public Safety and National Security Committee for tabling motions urging the government to take further firearm measures, apart from new restrictions in Bill C-71.

The escalating clash cast a shadow over the Trump's nuclear talks with Kim and led critics to question why the president was bashing US partners while appearing to cozy up to one of Washington's bitterest long-time foes.

The president said he was annoyed by Trudeau's comments about not letting Canada get pushed around.

Scaramucci went on to say that Trump has great respect for Trudeau, likes him personally and thinks he is an effective leader - and that Canadians shouldn't read too much into Trump's personal attacks.

Canadian officials have stressed the two countries' extensive trading relationship and pointed out that Canada is the top export destination for 35 USA states and that 9 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with its northern neighbor.

Trump himself attacked Trudeau on Twitter as "dishonest & weak" before backing out of a joint G7 statement, while top economic aide Larry Kudlow said Trudeau had "stabbed us in the back". He's railed many times in recent days against Canadian import duties of 270 percent on dairy.

The NAFTA talks have stalled since Trump last month imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum.

Earlier this week Mr Trump also called Mr Trudeau "very dishonest and weak". Mr. Navarro made it clear the comments referred to Mr. Trudeau. The Trudeau government has announced it will impose dollar-for-dollar, retaliatory tariffs on metals and a range of other USA products, starting July 1.

Trump, who has since threatened to impose tariffs on Canada, added: "He learned".

"If the United States decides to apply new tariffs, Canada will be ready", the official said. "We look forward to looking at the details of the agreement".
