Zinedine Zidane steps down as Real Madrid coach

Zinedine Zidane steps down as Real Madrid coach

In a tenure spanning just two-and-a half years, Zinedine Zidane managed to do a three-peat of the Champions League while also getting his hands on the league title in the 2016-17 season.

The timing comes as a shock to many after Real Madrid defeated Liverpool, 3-1, in the Champions League final on Saturday.

Manchester United are interested in signing Gareth Bale this summer but have been given no indication Real Madrid are willing to sell, sources have told ESPN FC.

After Real Madrid won the Champions League the third consecutive time, Ronaldo used the opportunity to make the night all about himself amid rumours of his departure from Los Blancos, saying that he was unsure about what the future holds for him.

Zidane's retirement as a Real Madrid player in 2006 also came as a surprise, when the then-33-year-old made a decision to hang up his boots in the aftermath of that year's World Cup final despite having another year on his club contract. For now though, it seems Zidane is holding out till the end of the World Cup before taking any decisions.

The Sun claim Chelsea will try to persuade Zinedine Zidane to take over as their new manager - and that his former France team-mate Laurent Blanc will be the new front-runner for the job if Zidane is not interested.

It is understood that there is no buy-out clause in Pochettino's new Spurs deal, and no verbal agreement with chairman Daniel Levy that the 46-year-old could leave if Madrid come calling.

Madrid sports daily AS said after the final that Zidane was "the architect of this glorious and possibly unrepeatable era".

And in a social media post, Ronaldo was quick to pay tribute to departing Madrid coach Zidane. "I have the addicted gene and you have to live with it".

"I signed a new contract 10 days ago - what is going to happen tomorrow, I don't know, but I will always tell you 'football is football, ' football will put you in your place always", said Pochettino.
