Given their ages - Messi is 31 and Ronaldo 33 - this could be the last the world sees of the pair, who have monopolised the world player of the year award for the last 10 years, on the biggest stage of all.

Here, AFP Sport looks at Messi's biggest disappointments with Argentina.

Unless you are Argentinian or Portuguese, there's no need to shed a tear for them because the spotlight will now deservedly be on the new wave of global superstars - 19-year-old Frenchman Kylian Mbappe sizzled with his pace and brace in the 4-3 win over Argentina, 22-year-old Mexican Hirving Lozano tore Germany apart, and 24-year-old Englishman Harry Kane is living up to his billing as the world's best No. 9 with five goals so far in this tournament.

He also grabbed the only goal in the 1-0 victory over Morocco.

Two Kylian Mbappe goals, a penalty from Antoine Griezmann and a screamer from Benjamin Pavard sent the French into the quarterfinal via a 4-3 win.

A similar situation could arise in Group B too, as Spain and Portugal have identical records at the time of writing as well. We played some really good stuff for 35-40 minutes but then of course the second half was more hard .

If you don't think this tactic of cozying up to Trump this election year is costing her liberal votes, think again. Meanwhile, on Twitter, the North Dakota Democratic-NPL account also took advantage of the moment.

In the aftermath, with emotions running high, Messi announced his retirement from global football on the back of three final defeats in three consecutive years.

"It hurts not to be a champion", Messi said at the time. "We need to fix many things in Argentinian football, but I prefer to do this from inside and not criticise from outside", he said. He is, most of the time, from a different planet, but even for the Barcelona superstar, playing at the biggest worldwide stage in four years might be too much.

Make no mistake about it, their failure at the World Cup - both have still not scored in the knockout rounds in four editions - does not diminish what they have achieved in other competitions. And this is the Mascherano, who was arguably the best player of the World Cup in 2014, where he was the boss of the midfield, making tackles left, right and centre and distributing the ball perfectly ahead.
