Meant no disrespect to Trump, says official

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) on Sunday harshly criticized President Donald Trump for his back-and-forth statements on whether or not he sides with the USA intelligence community's assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 election or Russian President Vladimir Putin, who denied the allegations again last week.

Numerous politicians have criticised Mr Trump for his post-summit statements raising doubts about Russia's interference in the 2016 United States elections, and past and current intelligence community officials also differed with many of his statements.

While the three-term Republican lawmaker did not explain exactly how he or Congress could stop a president from meeting privately with a foreign leader, he did say the idea could affect future presidents as well.

"For whatever reason, this president acts like he's compromised", Schiff told ABC's This Week. I can tell you there may be times that we need to do that.

There was a significant danger that left to his own devices, he might have been persuaded by President Putin to do the same in the Baltic states and Poland, which would have provoked an immediate crisis between the United States and its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies. While he said Page was no "James Bond", the adviser had connections to the Kremlin that predated his involvement with Trump.

"Basically, they are the ones that are trying to undermine our basic values and divide with our allies", Mr Coats said of Russian Federation.

"(Putin) is not interested in better relations with the United States", Republican Sen.

Republican senator proposes resolution backing USA intelligence agencies
Trump's refusal to condemn Putin and Russian Federation over the USA intelligence community's findings garnered harsh blowback .

"I thought it was a very disturbing performance with Vladimir Putin", Toomey said on a telephone town-hall he held with Pennsylvania residents Wednesday.

Gowdy, also on Fox, suggested that the White House invitation extended to Putin - which caught even senior administration figures like Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, unawares - was unwise.

Several senior Democrats said Trump's public show of skepticism of US intelligence conclusions about Russian election interference - while he stood side-by-side with Putin - suggested that the Russian leader, a onetime spymaster, had some kind of hold over him. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders claimed later in the day that Trump was saying "no" to answering additional questions.

The theory has gained a lot of traction in the wake of the POTUS' joint press conference with Russian President Putin in Helsinki.

Tweeting from his golf course in New Jersey, Mr Trump reinforced his meeting with Putin went well despite previous contradicting statements.

"I'm glad that he cleaned that up because it left, if you watched that video, it leaves the impression that my intelligence community says one thing, Putin says another, I'm siding with Putin, and that was a bad impression to leave behind". Any expression of concern about Russian interference seems, in President Trump's mind, to delegitimize his electoral victory, and consequently his presidency.

"Again, we tried to look into allegations that the Russians may have been funneling money through the NRA, but the GOP found that too hot to handle", Schiff said. He walked back that statement a day later, saying he'd meant to say he didn't see why Russian Federation wouldn't be involved. The leaders of the two countries spoke more than 4 hours.
