Narendra Modi government sails through no-confidence motion with easy win

"You can abuse me and call me names but I don't have any hatred towards you", Gandhi said to cheers from Congress lawmakers just before he hugged his rival.

The Modi government is expected to have a smooth sailing when it faces the first no-confidence motion in four years in the Lok Sabha.

"Today, the whole nation saw it on TV", Modi said.

The Prime Minister also mimicked Rahul Gandhi's wink after the hug, using his hands, and chided him with the phrase: "Bachkani harkat (childish antics)".

Modi said only the 125 crore people of the country can decide who would sit in the prime minister's chair or who can be unseated.

Several BJP leaders, including Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, took a swipe at the Congress president, saying a "strong natural disaster hit the Parliament" after his speech. "I can tell you that BJP is going to lose the 2019 Lok Sabha polls as there will be one-to-one fight everywhere", he added. "I can not dare to see eye-to-eye with you", he told the Congress chief on his remark that he can not look in the Congress leader's eyes.

The BJP leaders have been acting "out of fear" as "other processes" will start if they lose power and this has generated anger which is "crushing" India, Gandhi said.

The Congress chief referred to the amount of Rs 15 lakh that was promised to every Indian by the BJP before coming to power after bringing in all black money stashed overseas, and termed it as "Jumla strike number one'".

"After Rahul Gandhi's speech on the no-confidence motion, a massive natural disaster hit Parliament and the Congress president had to take shelter under the strongest pillar of India's politics - Narendra Modi". He said the Prime Minister had described himself as a "Chowkidar"(watchman) but has turned out to be a "Bhagidar"(partner). "What is the hurry [to become prime minister?]" Modi asked.

Asserting that some people are indulging in "negative" politics, PM Modi said he was not doing politics of appeasement or vote bank. We have been working with "Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas' mantra", he said.

Modi and Gandhi's running war of words has escalated since polls showed a decline in the BJP's popularity, fanning hopes of an opposition comeback in next year's elections after a Congress rout in 2014. The contract was taken away from HAL, a PSU, he said.

"Any instance of violence brings shame to the nation". While lashing out at the government, Rahul said everybody knows with whom PM Narendra Modi went to France to finalise the deal.

He blamed the Congress for division of the country at the time of the independence, as also for division of Andhra Pradesh in a manner which had left the people there unhappy.

The Congress leader, however, embraced him as he remained seated. "She destabilised Atal-Ji's government and never formed one herself", he said.
