Netflix has just become the top Emmy-nominated network

The 2018 Emmy nominations were revealed on Thursday morning, and while there were some pleasant surprises, along with some stale favorites (William H. Macy again?), there were also some very notable absences. The series' 20 nods were the fourth-most for any show, finishing only behind "Game of Thrones" (22), "Saturday Night Live" (21), and "Westworld" (21).

In addition, Hader is nominated for outstanding guest actor on a comedy series for returning to his old stomping grounds to host "Saturday Night Live".

Every year, there are some surprising oversights.

Last year, after "The Handmaid's Tale" helped Hulu break into the Emmy race in its biggest way yet, Craig Erwich, head of content at the streamer, revealed to Variety that their strategy of looking for shows that have "a big world, feel relevant and feel like television events" had paid off.

The top comedy nominee is Donald Glover's Atlanta, with 16. Both Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) were snubbed in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories while Sophie Turner (Sophie Turner) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) missed out on Best Supporting Actress bids.

Its nods included best drama, the category it won in 2015 and 2016.

Competing with Moss, Oh and Russell for lead drama actress are Claire Foy for "The Crown", Tatiana Maslany of "Orphan Black" and Evan Rachel Wood of "Westworld".

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards are scheduled to air on NBC September 17.

The GLOW series on Netflix earned an Emmy award nomination for outstanding comedy series.
