A series of suicide bombings and attacks that sparked fighting between local armed groups in southern Syria killed around 90 people Wednesday, a local health official and activists said, spreading mayhem in a province that has been relatively quiet throughout Syria's seven-year conflict.

"Today's crime shows that countries supporting terrorism are trying to breathe life back into the terrorist organisation to keep it as a card in their hand that they will use to achieve political gains", Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he received Russia's envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev.

The attacks took place in and around the government-held city of Sweida, state media and monitors reported. It was also learned that the army units fended off on Wednesday an attack by Daesh radicals in three villages east of Sweida.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that 302 people, including 135 civilians, were killed. The militants also swarmed several villages in the province's northeast, and in some cases, shot residents as they slept, according to activist-operated Facebook page Sweida News Network.

The Syrian government has retaken control of much of southern Syria in recent months.

Overall, the Syrian Observatory said, more than 150 people were killed during the day, including at least 62 civilians and more than 90 locals who joined in the fight against ISIS.

While the Syrian army managed to prevent another attack two suicide bombers belonging to the group "Islamic state".

Fuelling tensions were reports the ultra-hardline jihadists who attacked had come to the Lajat area north of Sweida only a few months ago after they were allowed them to go there under a surrender deal to evacuate their south Damascus pockets. An initial investigation suggested the Islamic State was responsible for the rockets.

The Observatory also reported bodies found killed inside homes and that the militants had also abducted some residents, their fate unknown.
