The U.S. ambassador to Russian Federation on Thursday described President Donald Trump's one-on-one meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Helsinki later this month as an accomplishment "in itself".

Peskov says, "President Putin feels absolutely comfortable in all formats that are comfortable for his interlocutors" and the Kremlin "doesn't rule out" such a meeting.

But if Trump decides to go ahead with a one-on-one without his delegation behind closed doors, it would represent a thumb in the eye of his critics, given the curiosity and widespread concern in Washington and among US allies over the relationship between the US President and the Russian leader.

Last year, Trump and Putin met on the margin of global summits: the first was the G-20 meeting in Hamburg in July 2017, and the second, the joint AIPAC-ASEAN Summit that was held in November 2017 in Vietnam. Another summit is due on July 16th in Helsinki still aimed at world peace.

While the senior administration official said the summit must focus on carrying out a "sober assessment of the root causes" of problems in the US-Russia, the official also called the summit "a deliverable in itself". Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

"You do not want to go into this encounter with Putin having just come off a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit that was in the kind of disarray that we left the G7 summit", said Napper.

Lavrov and Pompeo also discussed "a number of current issues of the world agenda, including the situation around Syria and on the Korean Peninsula", the ministry said.
