Tropical Depression, Hurricane Both Spinning Out in the Atlantic

Tropical Depression, Hurricane Both Spinning Out in the Atlantic

Right on schedule, Tropical Depression #3 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Chris early Sunday morning, the third named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Beryl only kept its hurricane title for about a day, as the system was downgraded to a tropical storm by the National Hurricane Center, holding steady with 45 miles per hour sustained winds, according to the 5 a.m. Sunday advisory.

Beryl will run into upper-level westerlies in Sunday night or Monday morning, making it hard for Beryl to become more organized again, and its chances of being a hurricane before reaching the Lesser Antilles have decreased significantly.

Beryl's hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 10 miles from the centre, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles.

On this latest forecast track, Tropical Storm Beryl is estimated to pass between 100 and 120 miles (160 to 190 km) north of Barbados by tonight.

Current computer modeling projects the system will slowly drift northward while making a circle well off the North Carolina coast.

A tropical storm warning was in effect Sunday morning for Guadeloupe and Dominica, forecasters said.

Maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour (120 km/h) with higher gusts.

"The depression is expected to meander off the coasts of the Carolinas for the next several days".

Forecasters said Beryl appears to have lost some of its organization from Friday afternoon, and they have lowered any expected strengthening.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain through Sunday across the southern Leeward Islands and northern Windward Islands. A forecast model shows the storm wouldn't approach land until Wednesday, when it could skirt Nova Scotia before impacting Newfoundland on Thursday.

The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, spared Bermuda a year ago, but battered the Caribbean as well as the United States. By Tuesday, the storm will begin moving northeast and away from the U.S. There are no watches or warnings in effect at this time, but people along the coast of North Carolina should monitor the progress of this system. Winds have decreased to about 50mph with more weakening forecast as the system reaches the Lesser Antilles.
