Trump orders US flags lowered to honor slain journalists

President Donald Trump has reversed the initial rejection of a request to lower the White House flag to half-staff to honor the newspaper employees who were killed in a Maryland shooting last week.

According to FOX News, Sanders would not say how the request was originally denied but said that when Trump heard that Buckley wanted to reach out directly to him he "immediately" ordered the flags lowered.

In the White House proclamation, Trump said that the nation "shares the sorrow of those affected by the shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland".

She said that White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders spoke with Buckley both Monday night and Tuesday morning to alert him to the decision.

President Trump has previously ordered flags to be flown at half-staff for other mass shootings, including the tragedies in Las Vegas; Santa Fe, Texas; and Parkland, Florida.

"I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities overseas, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations", Trump said.

Buckley told The Baltimore Sun Monday: "Obviously, I'm disappointed, you know?. It's just as important as any other tragedy".

When asked Tuesday morning if the president is committed to stop calling journalists the "enemy of the people", Sanders said that Mr. Trump has a "great deal of respect for the press", but also called on the media to be responsible with their reporting.
