Trump says he's confident Kim will denuclearize

Pompeo said in Tokyo there was still a lot of work to do, but he was confident North Korean leader Kim Jong Un would stick to a commitment to abandon nuclear weapons he made during a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Singapore last month.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimise the work that we've achieved".

However, the statement also appeared to separate North Korea's annoyance with the US from its relationship with Trump himself.

"What South Korea wants is to connect the Korean peninsula to reach out directly to Russian Federation and China, but what the North primarily wants is to shore up its own economy by bringing in more money from overseas to its special economic zones".

"People are going to make stray comments after meetings".

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, says North Korea could dismantle its nuclear arsenal within a year, but other USA officials have said they hope it can be accomplished by the end of Trump's first term in the White House, in January 2021.

He characterised the discussions as positive, but hours after he left Pyongyang, North Korea issued an angry statement rejecting what it described as Washington's "gangster-like" demand for rapid nuclear disarmament. Kim, who previously held the position of Special Envoy for North Korea Policy, met with his North Korean counterparts Sunday in Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea shortly before Pompeo's trip.

Trump himself sought to put the best face possible on the state of the bargaining with North Korea.

While few think that the world would be better off with increased tensions between the US and North Korea - except perhaps national security adviser John Bolton - Trump's pathetic attempts at diplomacy have squandered an actual opportunity to move toward long-term peace.

The United States maintains some 28,500 servicemembers in South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after the three-year conflict ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

Daily NK reported the lectures are not having the desired effect, and its source said the North Koreans attending the lecture appeared disinterested or bored.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo then canceled a meeting with the Indian foreign minister to fly off to Pyongyang, presumably to tell the North Koreans that they had better start delivering on their promises.

When asked about reports that North Korea is building up sites tied to its nuclear weapons program, Pompeo insisted that Kim Jong Un is "still committed" to complete denuclearization.

"It seems the USA misunderstood our goodwill and patience", the statement said.

"But we did have very serious discussion on very important matters yesterday", said Kim via an interpreter.

Trump has both praised China for its role in bringing North Korea to the negotiating table and criticised it for loose enforcement of sanctions, particularly on the border between the two countries. "The North Koreans talked about a vague, step-by-step simultaneous approach, which seems to me the right way to move forward".

Speaking on Fox News Sunday, Graham said: "I see China's hands all over this", adding that there is "no doubt" in his mind that China is "pulling the North Koreans back".

On March 8, Trump agreed on the spur of the moment to meet with Kim, thereby putting the dictator of this two-bit police state on the same level as the USA president, without any guarantee that he would get anything in return. The censure was a stark contrast to the Pompeo's description of the talks as "productive".

US Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Pompeo did not meet Kim, as he had done on his two previous visits to North Korea this year, but handed over a letter to him from Trump.

And he said some progress had been made towards agreeing "the modalities" of North Korea's destruction of a missile facility.

He also said talks had yielded an agreement to form a "working-level" group to oversee day-to-day interactions between the United States and North Korea.

KCNA said Pyongyang had offered to discuss declaring a formal end to the war to mark next month's anniversary of the armistice. But he also had to assuage anxious Asian allies after Trump said he would be stopping U.S.
