Red-haired Scots will finally be able to express themselves in emoji form, when a range of new ginger cartoon faces comes to Apple iPhones and iPads later this year.

There are new food emojis too including lobster, mango, leafy green vegetable, moon cake, and more.

We expect the new emoji to arrive alongside iOS 12, macOS Mojave, and watchOS 5 in September.

The soon-to-be-released update includes several new emoji types, most notably two new superheroes. As expected, these emoji designs were created based on approved Unicode 11.0 characters, which we shared earlier this year.

July 17 is World Emoji Day and to celebrate Facebook has revealed the social media website's most popular emojis.

Apple is celebrating the occasion by giving users a look at the new emoji characters headed to the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Mac later this year.

The new emojis will better represent people with red hair, gray hair and curly hair as well as bald people, Apple said.

According to NBC, World Emoji Day was the top trending item on 17 July in the year 2015. There's also a new superhero emoji, and emojis for a softball, and an infinity symbol.

Visitors to Apple's page for its executive leadership team on Monday were surprised to find that the official headshots were replaced with emoji-fied portraits.

While you search, Google's advanced artificial intelligence "neural network" will try and guess what it's seeing - proof that machine learning can be used for more than just the serious and practical applications.

Emoji were invented in 1999 for Japanese mobile phones by Shigetaka Kurita.

"The heart is the reason why we chose to make emoji in the beginning", he said.
