"I am focused 100% on bringing this city together and uniting Chicago around a set of policies that will reverse gun violence, end this carnage, improve our schools and provide tax fairness to working people".

"Our souls are burdened", Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. But he did admit the police department and city could do better.

Giuliani also falsely claimed that Chicago had "63 murders this weekend".

"We as a city, in every corner, have an accountability and a responsibility".

Waller said numerous incidents were targeted, gang-related shootings, and in some cases, suspects were using larger summer crowds as cover. Giuliani, referring to him as "Jerry", called him a "policing genius".

"These shootings are not random, they're fueled by gang conflicts".

Chicago ended 2017 with fewer homicides, 650, than 2016, when there were 771. Though the drop was significant, last year's total exceeded the combined number of killings in NY and Los Angeles, the two US cities bigger than Chicago.

"Let me be clear: I am a proud Democrat and I do not agree with Mayor Guiliani's political views and I certainly remain opposed to the misguided, divisive tone and policies of Donald Trump".

"Since 2011, he's failed", Caldwell said of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
