Dali Mpofu to represent MDC Alliance as they challenge Zim election result

Zimbabwe's opposition coalition has filed a legal challenge to results of the country's recent election, in a move that delays the inauguration of Emmerson Mnangagwa as president of Zimbabwe.

Analysts say that the legal challenge has little chance of success given the courts' historic tilt towards ZANU-PF, which has ruled since independence from British colonial rule in 1980.

Chamisa has claimed he won 56 percent of votes and called the election "fraudulent, illegal and illegitimate".

Judges must rule on the case within 14 days and could declare a victor, call another election, or order a run-off or recount, the Veritas legal group said.

The MDC accuses Mr Mnangagwa's ruling ZANU-PF party of rigging the vote, the first poll since long-time president Robert Mugabe was ousted in November.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that his country is open for business, but this new law - the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Amendment Act - could scupper those plans as far as the U.S. is concerned.

"There is no inauguration that will take place until the matter is determined by the court".

"The MDC alliance say some of the evidence they have shows forms that have been tampered with, figures changed here and there - and they're going to present that in court", said Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa, reporting from Harare. "We are seeking a declaration to the effect that the presidential election was not properly conducted", MDC party lawyer Thanbani Mpofu said.

The aftermath of the election has been marred by allegations of a crackdown on opposition members, including beatings and arrests.

It said it had received numerous complaints of "hunting down" and intimidation, often by men in military uniform, of voters thought to have backed the opposition.
