After Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy of MA died in 2009, President Barack Obama ordered flags at the White House be flown at half-staff for five days.

The Arizona Republican died on Saturday of brain cancer.

A statement about McCain's death said, "Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018".

President Donald Trump opted not to sign a proclamation honoring McCain.

Flags will remain lowered until sunset on the day of internment.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days. Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush have reportedly been invited to deliver eulogies. Vice President Mike Pence is expected to represent the White House at McCain's funeral service.

The Suns also sent out their condolences to McCain's family along with a genuine message on how the organization feels about the late senator's contributions to the nation. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!" he wrote on Saturday night. The senator will lie in state at the Arizona state capitol on Wednesday with his first memorial service taking place in Phoenix on Thursday.

"As classmates at the U.S. Naval Academy and Naval Air Station Pensacola flight school, Senator McCain and Admiral Chuck Larson developed a close friendship that endured throughout their adult lives", the statement from McCain's office says.
