Hurricane Lane threatens direct hit on Hawaiian islands; residents urged to prep

At a news conference on Wednesday, current Governor of Hawaii David Ige said, "Be prepared to shelter in place with 14 days of food supplies and water and any other necessities".

The storm was in the Pacific about 285 miles south of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona early Wednesday, with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.

"Whenever storms try and come up, they fizzle out when they get there", Freedman, Axios's science editor, said Thursday in an interview on Cheddar.

The slow-moving hurricane has caused flood concerns and led to major road closures, according to an update from the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.

The National Weather Service has warned of "life-threatening flash flooding and landslides", and that winds could reach up to 220 km/h in an official statement. All public schools canceled classes until further notice and many state employees have been asked to stay home.

NASA astronaut and Maryland native Ricky Arnold tweeted photos of the Category 4 hurricane on August 22.

All of the islands are under weather alerts.

A hurricane watch is in effect for a number of areas, including Maui, Central Oahu and parts of the Big Island.

The forecast for Hurricane Lane has been a challenge for meteorologists.

Hilo Airport has seen almost 15 inches of rain in the same period of time. Hawaii rarely gets hit, and the last major storm there was Iniki in 1992. While hurricanes are common along the Gulf Coast, the Eastern Seaboard and in the Caribbean, tropical cyclones are nearly unheard of in Hawaii.

And many others are leaving. The storm is the latest in a series of misfortunes for the island chain.

This time, residents who survived Iniki said they're taking Lane seriously, because although it's rare, they know what a hurricane can do to Hawaii. Originally the storm was a category 5 but recently weakened to a category 4.

President Trump this week signed a Disaster Declaration for the state, pledging to provide federal resources for recovery and catastrophe relief. Hurricane Lane will likely bring life threatening conditions across Hawaii through Saturday with damaging winds, unsafe surf, coastal storm surge and intense flooding rains.

The arrival of the storm's outer bands made the threat seem more real.
